‘Island of the Hungry Ghosts’ screening at The Rex Theatre, Charlton 14th June at 7pm If there is one film to see this year, then it is the internationally acclaimed documentary film ‘Island of the Hungry Ghosts’. On awarding it best documentary 2018 at the Tribeca Film Festival New York, the jury summarised it as a ‘…film that moved us deeply, impressed us immensely and made us feel we were witnessing nothing less than the emergence, fully formed, of a major new cinematic talent.’ That talent is Gabrielle Brady, an Australian filmmaker, currently living part-time in Berlin, who weaves the mythical and the real world into her lyrical documentary, telling a story that many did not want told. Her work is described as an ‘… an exquisite use of metaphor.’ ‘Island of the Hungry Ghosts’ is set on Christmas Island and Brady, with a deft touch, weaves a narrative that follows the annual migration of the red crabs, Chinese mysticism rites and the work of Poh Lin Lee, a trauma counsellor who works with asylum seekers. Beautiful and haunting images of ‘island life’ are captured by Australian cinematographer Michael Latham and the film is visually superb. No wonder it has now won several awards including: Best Documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival 2018; the Buyens-Chagoll Award at Visions du Réel 2018 Switzerland's most important documentary festival and one of the most highly respected such events in Europe; Grand Jury Prize at Mumbai International Film Festival; The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) Human Rights Award; Best Documentary Crested Butte Festival, Best Documentary Film Adelaide Film Festival, Best Documentary Film Valetta Film Festival, Zurich Film Festival Mercurius Award. This special screening on Friday 14 June at the Rex Theatre Charlton coincides with the start of Refugee Week. This year’s theme is ‘A world of stories’ and to help bring the stories of refugees to a wider audience, retired ABC presenter Dave Lennon will be hosting a post screening Q & A with Christine Cummins (formerly of Wycheproof) a Torture and Trauma counsellor who was based on Christmas Island for five years and has now authored a book ‘Dignity in a Teacup’ that recounts her long career of working with refugees in many parts of the world. Joining the Q&A panel is Guy Gilbert SC a co-author of the ‘Refugee Law’ chapter of the ‘Lawyers Practice Manual’ and former member of the Refugee Review Tribunal, who also has an extensive career in working with refugees.
