The Charlton Neighbourhood House had a fantastic response to its latest ‘Table for 12’ evening featuring delicious Greek fare. Hosted by local Deb Clearly, a full house of enthusiastic attendees were initiated into the flavoursome cooking of Greece with Meatballs (Keftedes) and an accompanying dessert Baklava.
A special thanks to Charlon College for use of the well-equipped North Central Trade Training Centre’s kitchen facility, without whose support events like this couldn’t take place. All those attended agreed it was a terrific fun evening and requests for more cooking classes were received. Keep an eye out for future Table for 12’s and other activities coming soon from the Neighbourhood House.”

A terrific evening was recently enjoyed at the Avoca River Travellers Rest BBQ area when the Charlton Neighbourhood House arranged a fun evening specifically for men. With support from Buloke Shire, cook extraordinaire Ian Scott hosted the dozen participants with a friendly BBQ and drinks. Well-known around town for his cooking prowess, Ian gave some tips on preparing and serving the perfect steak. The ‘Steak with a mate’ concept aimed at bringing men together in a friendly social atmosphere to enjoy some banter, a meal and a few drinks.
Mateship is crucial for building strong, supportive relationships, fostering trust and collaboration. It encourages emotional well-being by providing a sense of belonging and loyalty. In challenging times, mateship offers strength, shared experiences, and mutual care. It strengthens communities and enhances resilience, making individuals feel valued and connected. With funding from Buloke Shire the evening could be made available free of charge which was much appreciated by all involved. The Charlton Neighbourhood House was excited to have representatives from Mallee Family Care and Northern District Community Health come along to our recent Carers Group lunch at the East Charlton Hotel. A large group of attendees were provided information and access to answers to a myriad of questions relating to mental health, disaster funding, legal aid and much more. Informative flyers and literature were available to take, and everyone present commented on what a wonderful afternoon it was.
Carers groups are incredibly important as they provide vital support and resources for those who dedicate their time and energy to looking after others. Caring for someone can be rewarding but also emotionally taxing. Carers groups offer a safe space to share experiences, feelings, and frustrations with people who truly understand. Members of these groups often share tips and strategies for managing caregiving tasks, navigating healthcare systems, and addressing specific challenges. The Charlton carers Group meet monthly for a social lunch and to listen to a range of speakers from various organizations. Lunch is provided for at a subsidised price with drinks at bar prices. A special thanks must go to Carol Bennett for all the time she puts into making these days such a wonderful success. For all enquiries contact the Charlton Neighbourhood House on 0473 759 456. The very popular Buloke Book Club has returned for 2025 at the Charlton Library in Armstrong Street Charlton. Held on the third Tuesday of each month, the group discuss any interesting books that they have recently been reading and give feedback and recommendations on titles and authors.
Book clubs hold great value for a variety of reasons! Here are some benefits they offer: 1.Fostering Community: Book clubs create a sense of connection and belonging by bringing together people with shared interests in reading and discussion. 2.Encouraging Diverse Perspectives: Engaging in a group discussion allows participants to hear different viewpoints and interpretations broadening their understanding. 3.Boosting Accountability: Being part of a book club motivates readers to complete books they may not have finished otherwise, cultivating a habit of consistent reading. 4.Expanding Literary Horizons: Book clubs often expose members to genres, authors, or topics they might not have considered to explore. 5.Enhancing Critical Thinking and Communication: Discussing themes, characters, and narratives promotes meaningful conversations. 6.Providing Enjoyment and Relaxation: They're a great way to unwind, enjoy stories, and bond with others in a lighthearted setting. Make a note in your diary to pop along between 10.30 and 12pm to join in the conversation. Everyone is welcome and a cuppa can be enjoyed after the session. David Beatty led the class that instructed residents in the art of weaving using wooden looms. With the spacious well-lit location of the Charlton Senior Citizens Rooms, participants were greeted with an array of machines that would be theirs for the day.
Wooden looms have a fascinating history that dates back thousands of years. The earliest looms appeared around 5 BC and were simple wooden frames designed to hold threads in place for weaving. Over time, these looms evolved, incorporating innovations like heddles and treadles to make weaving more efficient. The Industrial Revolution brought significant changes, with wooden looms transitioning to mechanized versions. However, traditional wooden looms are still cherished today for handweaving and artisanal crafts. The eager participants received some first hand knowledge from Davis and created some basic items to take away. All agreed it was a terrific activity and are keen to return and continue their education in weaving.
